Installing a safe

Home safes are becoming an increasingly popular option for storing valuables as they are very quick to install and have come down considerably in price compared to a few years ago. Designs and installation techniques will differ slightly between manufacturers, but the example below shows a typical system. Some home insurance policies will specify safes for your type of cover. You may also want to consider firesafes, which as the name suggests, will offer a fireproof option.

fitting a safe 1. If possible its best to fix a safe to a concrete floor. Use a cable, pipe and stud detector to help check for hidden services. Mark the fixing positions through the safe base.
drilling holes for safe fixings 2. Put the safe to one side and drill holes to accommodate the supplied fixings (Usually coach bolts or expanding bolts). Use a bit size as directed by the manufacturer.
bolting safe down 3. Insert plugs if supplied with fixings and reposition the safe. Screw the bolts in place. You may use a drill/ driver with a spanner bit as long as the drill/driver is not too large to get inside the safe, or, you can simply use an adjustable spanner.
choosing safe combination 4. Once securely screwed in place, close the safe and set your chosen combination as directed by the manufacturer’s guidelines.
